"Chloe, I know you can get them back safely without me, plus, Moons, Boey, and Zoey need our help, their minds won't last much longer trapped in the laundry room with a single pad overflowing with urine and feces, no more food in the automatic food dispenser, and not having walks for almost three days!" Michael was saying to Chloe.
"I don't know Michael; I don't like the idea of staying here alone."
"If you prefer, I can stay here and bring Pearl and Jason home when the search team finds them, and you can go back home and take care of the pets."
"What? No! They must smell like crazy!" said Chloe.
"Then it's decided! I'll go and you'll stay."
At the dock, Michael turned to say goodbye.
"I guess I'll see you when we find Jason and Pearl, however long that will be." said Michael, then he looked away.
"Michael, don't go yet!"
Turning to face Chloe again he asked, "Uhh… yeah?"
"Come here for a sec."
Chloe led him through some dense foliage to a small clearing in the trees.
"Michael, I've been keeping this a secret for a long time. I don't think even Pearl knows. I just want you to know, before you leave, that…"
"Well... I just—"
Suddenly, Chole threw her arms around Michael and kissed him, before she could really stop to think about it. Michael, although kind of taken by surprise, didn't do anything to stop her. Throughout the months they were together, he had slowly been finding love in his heart for Chloe.
"Oooooooooooooh!" said a small voice behind them.
Chloe and Michael quickly pulled away and turned their heads to see three little kids staring at them from the bushes.
"Awwww, that was sooo cute!" said a little girl.
"Wait till mommy hears about that!" said a boy, maybe four years old.
"Chloe—" Michael started, as the little kids ran off. A megaphone rang through the air.
"Attention passengers. The 3:00 return boat will be leaving shortly. Please be on board five minutes prior to departure."
"Chloe," Michael started again, "I love you."
"I love you too." Chloe said in a small voice.
And with that, he walked off to the boat, bought his ticket, and climbed on. As the boat pulled away from the dock, he turned and waved to Chloe.
She waved back until he was out of sight.
Then, sobbing softly, she walked away and over to the visitor center. She quickly dried her tears before entering.
She nearly stumbled into a waiter when she saw someone off to a corner.
Pearl was standing at the cafe corner, sipping some tea and looking as bewildered as ever. "Chloe! You'll never guess what happened..."
